Two houses a mile apart in this valley can need genuinely different equipment
The grade through the Conejo Valley is the single most useful local fact in this trade. It is why matching what is already installed is a poor way to choose a system here, and why a quote given over the telephone is a guess.
The calls we take most
No cooling, or no heat
Diagnosed and priced before anything is fitted, with the repair figure given separately from any replacement figure so you can compare them yourself rather than take one number on trust. Combustion tested and the heat exchanger inspected on anything that burns gas.
A room that never settles
Measured, not guessed. Airflow at that register against the others, static pressure, return capacity and the condition of the run feeding it. On hillside houses the run is often long, often in an attic, and often the whole answer.
Dust after a wind event
Fine dust indoors after a wind is usually arriving through gaps and duct leakage rather than through the filter. We measure where the air is actually coming from before recommending a filter you may not be able to use.
Smoke season
What your system can carry, measured with the proposed filter fitted, plus the air sealing that decides how much unfiltered air arrives anyway. We will explain the trade-offs and we will not make health claims about any of it.
Nothing restarted after the power came back
Often a lockout or a reset rather than a fault, and we will say so on the telephone at no charge. Where it is a real fault, a surge is the usual cause and the control board the usual casualty.
Before you buy, sell or let
What is installed, how old each unit is from its serial number, what condition it is in and what putting it right would realistically cost. In writing, quickly, because escrow does not wait.
What a hillside or ridge position actually changes
Plenty is claimed about exposed positions and not much of it is measured. Here is what we will say, and what we will not.
Debris and airflow. An outdoor unit in a wind-exposed position collects leaves, seed and grit against its coil far faster than a sheltered one. A blocked coil raises pressures, raises running cost and shortens the machine’s life. That is mechanical and it is visible with a torch.
Screening cuts both ways. A screen or an enclosure that keeps debris out also restricts the air the unit needs. We will tell you the clearance the manufacturer requires and design screening around it rather than around the look of it.
Service interval. An exposed unit wants its coil cleaned more often than a sheltered one. How much more often depends on your position, which is why we say it after looking rather than in a brochure.
What we will not claim: a number of extra years from any coating, cover or brand. That depends on your exposure, and nobody can put a figure on it for your house from the road.
Four things we say to homeowners here
-
Match the calculation, not the label
The tonnage on the machine you are replacing was chosen by somebody who may not have calculated anything. On a valley with this much variation, that is a poor thing to inherit.
-
A higher-rated filter is not free
It restricts more air. What your system can carry is a measurement taken with the filter in place, and it is specific to your system rather than to a box on a shelf.
-
Age alone is not a reason to replace
A system that holds its charge, moves the air it should and passes its safety checks works, whatever the year on the label. Age changes the arithmetic on an expensive repair and nothing else.
-
A gas appliance with no carbon monoxide alarm is the one urgent item
Everything else on this page can wait for a convenient week. That cannot. Fit one, and have the combustion tested and the heat exchanger inspected.
